Measurement and testing
Accurately analysing trace sulphur compounds is a persistent challenge across the energy, petrochemical, and refining industries. Even at parts-per-billion levels, sulphur can be harmful and corrosive to equipment, degrade catalysts, and compromise fuel quality. Achieving accurate and repeatable results relies on precise calibration - yet the reactive and unstable nature of sulphur compounds often makes traditional gas cylinder standards unreliable, as target molecules may be lost to storage vessels over time.
To ensure reliable quantification of trace sulphur species, laboratories and process facilities must carefully consider the gas standards, equipment, and materials used for calibration. Dynamic gas mixtures, created in real-time, are recommended when working at very low sulphur concentrations. Analytical methods such as Gas Chromatography with Sulphur Chemiluminescence Detection (GC-SCD) for natural gas, Gas Chromatography with Sulphur-Selective Detection (GC-SSD) for light petroleum liquids, and Gas Chromatography with Pulsed Flame Photometric Detection (GC-PFPD) all depend on accurate trace-level sulphur calibration to achieve meaningful results.
KIN-TEK Analytical, Inc. Trace Source™ disposable permeation tubes offer a robust solution for challenges in trace sulphur calibration. Each device contains a high-purity sulphur compound sealed and gravimetrically certified at a stable temperature to determine its emission rate. When used in KIN-TEK’s FlexStream™ Permeation System - equipped with a Base Module, Permeation Module, and Secondary Dilution Module - these permeation tubes generate fresh, dynamic gas standards from sub-ppmv down to ppbv concentrations. The system’s precise temperature and flow control, specialised coated or heat-traced tubing, and FlexLink™ software ensure accurate delivery to the analyser while minimising sample loss.
With over 550+ available NIST-traceable chemical compounds, KIN-TEK Analytical, Inc.’s permeation-based calibration technology enables confident, accurate analysis of trace sulphur species - empowering labs and refineries to meet demanding performance, safety, and regulatory requirements.
