Advanced flame detection and false alarm discrimination

21 Oct, 2026

In industrial environments, quickly distinguishing between a real fire and a false alarm is critical to protecting personnel, safeguarding assets, and maintaining operational continuity. The MSA General Monitors® FL5000 Multi-Spectrum Infrared Flame Detector combines advanced optical sensing, intelligent false alarm discrimination, and Bluetooth® connectivity to help facilities improve flame detection performance while reducing unnecessary process interruptions.

Designed for demanding applications across the oil and gas, petrochemical, power generation, and processing industries, the FL5000 leverages multiple infrared (IR) sensors and advanced algorithms utilising artificial neural networks to identify fire hazards with a high degree of accuracy. The detector's ability to differentiate real flames from common false alarm sources, such as sunlight reflections and lightning, helps operators respond with greater confidence while minimising nuisance alarms and unplanned shutdowns.

As the industry's first optical flame detector with Bluetooth® connectivity, the FL5000 also simplifies commissioning, configuration, diagnostics, and maintenance activities. Combined with robust communications capabilities for integration with plant safety and control systems, the detector supports a more connected approach to fire and gas monitoring.

The FL5000 is part of MSA Safety's comprehensive flame and gas detection portfolio, which also includes the FL500 Ultraviolet/Infrared Flame Detector, FL500-H2 UV/IR Flame Detector for Hydrogen Applications, ULTIMA® X5000 Gas Monitor, and HazardWatch® FX-12 Fire and Gas Detection System. Together, these solutions help organisations identify hazards earlier, improve situational awareness, and support safer operations across a wide range of industrial environments.
