New IR sensor facilitates stable and dependable methane detection measurements

Teledyne Gas and Flame Detection has introduced an innovative infrared (IR) sensor developed for their OLCT 100 XPIR, an explosion-proof IR fixed gas detector. This new development addresses the need for stable and reliable methane detection measurements in industrial, utility, and laboratory settings, where the presence of methane poses serious threats, including the formation of explosive mixtures and potential harm to people as well as the environment.

The new sensor provides enhanced measurement stability and resistance to catalytic poisons. The solution is economically advantageous, taking into consideration total cost of ownership, especially in environments where gases such as methane are present. Compared to catalytic oxidation, IR technology offers clear advantages such as eliminating the need for recurring sensor replacements and frequent calibration.

The IR methane sensor operates on the principle of using two wavelengths of IR energy: one for gas absorption and the other for a reference wavelength, compensating for temperature and humidity. IR sensors do not need oxygen to operate and are suitable for use in 0-100% by volume methane gas environments, providing a long lifespan even in the presence of background gas. The ATEX-approved OLCT 100 XPIR, renowned for detecting refrigerants, CO2, and combustible gases, ensures safe and reliable operation with its 4-20mA output.

It is worth noting that the same IR sensor technology is available in Teledyne Gas and Flame Detection's 700 series of fixed gas detectors, featuring an alphanumeric LED screen for displaying sensor status information.
