With the arrival of new methane emissions standards and looming legal reporting deadlines, the detection and monitoring of environmentally significant gases is under more scrutiny than ever. Across industrial and utility applications, Teledyne Gas & Flame Detection (Teledyne GFD) has introduced its MethaSense range of battery-powered methane detectors, designed to give operators reliable, continuous measurement using NDIR (non-dispersive infrared) sensor technology.
The MethaSense family comprises three models: MethaSense, MethaSense XP, and MethaSense Trace, all equipped with patented NDIR sensors to ensure precise and dependable methane detection. For residential and commercial use, MethaSense is a compact, wireless detector capable of measuring methane concentrations from zero to five percent by volume. Its high selectivity and resistance to sensor poisoning reduce the risk of false alarms, while integrated audible and visual alerts provide immediate warning of potential gas hazards. Compatibility with advanced metering infrastructure also enables integration into smart home systems, giving operators real-time insight into gas levels.
In industrial settings where reliability and durability are critical, MethaSense XP builds on the same sensor platform but adds a rugged design, corrosion resistance, and extended wireless communication options including LoRaWAN, NB-IoT, and Bluetooth. Its robust construction allows it to operate in areas with limited maintenance access, while audible and visual alarms and over 10 years of battery autonomy ensure continuous monitoring even in demanding conditions. With ATEX and IECEx certification, it is suitable for use in hazardous zones.
MethaSense Trace is designed for high-performance applications such as leak detection and repair (LDAR) and utility-scale monitoring. Its wide detection range, from 50 ppm to 100% volume, allows operators to monitor both low-level environmental emissions and high-concentration safety thresholds. The detector is built to withstand outdoor conditions, with an IP67 ingress protection rating, and supports 24/7 monitoring across large industrial sites. By combining real-time sensing with cloud-based analytics and automated reporting, MethaSense Trace enables facilities to detect, locate, and quantify methane emissions accurately, helping both to reduce environmental impact and to meet regulatory obligations.
As of 5 August 2025, EU operators must submit detailed, independently verified reports on their source-level methane emissions, in line with the EU Methane Regulation (previously Regulation 2024/1787). Compliance requires comprehensive, accurate monitoring from all relevant sources within a facility — a challenge that reliable, autonomous detection can help to meet.
“NDIR technology, as utilised by all three detectors in our new MethaSense series, offers high selectivity, fast response times and long-term reliability,” explains Régis PREVOST, Product Line Manager, Teledyne GFD. “Users benefit from natural gas detectors that provide a low-maintenance, cost-effective, versatile solution for continuous methane monitoring, supported by key features that include up to 10+ years of battery life, zero recalibration requirements, wireless connectivity options, and suitability for smart infrastructure and safety-critical environments.”
With methane emissions increasingly under the spotlight, the MethaSense range demonstrates how modern sensor technology can combine precision, durability, and real-world usability, giving operators the tools they need to safeguard people, property, and the environment.
