The volatility (or 'loss evaporation') of lubricating oils is a critical property to determine, particularly when servicing applications under high temperature conditions, such as lubrication for motor engine or industrial machinery. Portions of oil can evaporate under high temperature conditions, potentially altering oil properties such as viscosity, as it becomes thicker and heavier.
The Noack test is widely known as the referee method to accurately characterise the evaporation loss behavior of lubricants. Low Noack scores indicate oils that will retain its original protective and performance qualities even when facing severe operating temperature.
