The performance of a bearing can only be as good as that of the lubricant used. MCR tribometers from Anton Paar (Austria) offer a straightforward solution for studying the behavior of a lubricant in a bearing, or to characterise the bearing itself.
The T-PTD 200 and T-BTP tribology cells equipped with a roller bearing attachment can be used to determine the limiting friction of the bearing as well as its kinetic friction behavior under axial load. Exceptional and highly reproducible results are guaranteed through the precise speed and deflection control covering 9 decades. This is complemented by the possibility to control the test environment, with possible variations in temperature from -130 °C to 620 °C and changes in relative humidity from 5% to 95%. This setup also allows for the use of an inert gas atmosphere in the test chamber.
Preparation for the bearing tests is relatively simple and fast. The RheoCompass software used to run the tests comes with pre-loaded templates for these tests. This cost-efficient and time saving testing process can be used for effectively screening lubricating greases and oils.
With a single setup, MCR tribometers offer a host of testing possibilities for both rheological and tribological needs of the lubricant industry. The uniqueness of MCR tribometers lies in their highly precise and accurate determination of low-speed tribological characteristics of systems, including their breakaway torque and behavior during start-stop events.
