Faster Than Gravity: The Versatile SVM

In the petroleum industry, precise kinematic viscosity measurement across samples – from crude oil to fuels and lubricants – is essential. However, advanced analysis can provide deeper insights into a sample’s properties. These comprise evaluating viscosity, density, and more across a range of temperatures or over time.

Both of these advanced analyses can be performed using Anton Paar’s SVM 3001 viscometer, which operates across a broad temperature range (-60 to +135 °C, and down to -20 °C without an external chiller) and viscosity range (0.2 mm²/s to 30,000 mm²/s). A temperature scan allows viscosity data to be collected at multiple temperatures from a single sample filling, offering information on, e.g., fuel pumpability. Additionally, with this measurement mode, thermally induced changes, such as the volatilization of light components in residual or used oils or thermal degradation, can be detected. For example, increased viscosity at 20 °C after heating to 100 °C and cooling may indicate volatile loss. Identifying such effects enables adjustments in sample preparation or handling to minimize thermal exposure. Additionally, when measurements at elevated temperatures without the loss of volatiles are required, the measuring cell of SVM 3001 can be pressurized up to 2 bar, preventing evaporation and ensuring accurate results.

Time-resolved viscosity measurements also provide valuable insights into shear-induced structural changes, for instance, in diesel fuel analysis. Drag-reducing polymer additives facilitate pipeline transport but must degrade sufficiently to avoid engine issues. By continuously monitoring viscosity in a time scan with SVM 3001, users can determine whether degradation has progressed adequately or if further treatment is required.

Beyond these capabilities, SVM 3001 is a true multi-parameter instrument, allowing users to define methods for measuring multiple properties at different temperatures. For example, density can be measured at 15 °C, followed by viscosity at 40 °C and 100 °C in a single run. The SVM 3001 Cold Properties model further expands functionality with an integrated optical cell for cloud and freeze point determination, enabling full multi-parameter certification of diesel and jet fuel from a single syringe.

SVM operates autonomously and supports an optional autosampler for up to 71 positions. Its robust metal measuring cell eliminates the risk of broken glass capillaries, ensuring durability and reducing consumable costs. With a 150 % increase in throughput compared to manual methods, it requires just 1.5 mL of sample and solvent per measurement. An intuitive touchscreen interface streamlines operation, eliminating the need for an external PC. Anton Paar’s SVM viscometer series delivers significantly more analytical information than gravity-driven viscometers while complying with over 50 international standards. Upgrade your lab today!
