New methane leak detector to set new standard for natural gas pipe surveys

02 Jul, 2025

The IRwin® Methane Leak Detector from INFICON is a portable, Ex-certified solution built for efficient and highly accurate natural gas leak detection. Design for gas utilities, safety inspectors, and service contractors, IRwin delivers precise readings from 1 ppm to 100 Vol. % methane and 1–100% LEL thanks to its advanced infrared sensor technology. Multiple detection modes, including Universal Mode, allow simplified operation across inspection types such as above-ground surveying and bar hole testing

The unit features a patent-pending infrared system and integrated gas chromatograph, enabling reliable distinction between swamp gas and natural gas—even at low ethane concentrations. With fast response and recovery times, it minimises false alarms and ensures compliance with standards such as DVGW G 465-4.

The IRwin SX models are certified for use in hazardous environments (Zone 0 / Class I Div 1), meeting both ATEX and US safety standards. Designed with field operators in mind, the IRwin system includes a robust, ergonomic probe kit for streamlined gas pipeline surveys.
