Dr Raj Shah Honoured with the Eagle Award from ASTM International

Feb 25 2016

The American Society for Testing and Materials International  presented Dr. Raj Shah, currently a director at Koehler Instrument Company in New York, with its prestigious Eagle Award at a recent meeting. The award honours exceptional meritorious service within ASTM International, a global standards organisation that develops and publishes voluntary consensus technical standards for a number of materials, products, systems and services. Dr. Shah, who has a Ph. D in Chemical engineering from Penn State University, has spent the last 20 years as a technical office bearer of ASTM International, specifically ASTM Committee D02.

ASTM Committee D02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants was formed in 1904, and has so far awarded the Eagle award to less than 25 individuals. The D02 committee, with a current membership of approximately 2500 industry professionals and experts, currently has jurisdiction over 814 standards, published in six volumes of the Annual Book of ASTM Standards. These standards have, and continue to play, a preeminent role in all aspects relating to the standardisation of Petroleum Products and Lubricants.

According to an ASTM citation for the award, Shah received the Eagle Award for his “distinguished leadership as well as significant contributions to the standardisation process".

Dr. Shah is also a previous three-time recipient of ASTM International’s Award for Excellence, an exceptional distinction amongst ASTM members, whose current number exceeds 30000 of the world’s top technical experts and business professionals, representing 140 countries. A National Lubricating Grease Institute (NLGI) International Fellow, Shah was also recently honoured as the first recipient of the NLGI (India) President’s award.

A distinguished alumni award recipient, from the Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai, Dr. Shah is currently involved in working with various other universities and is on the Industrial Board of Advisers at the Department of Chemical Engineering at the State University of New York, Stony Brook; The School of Engineering, Design, Technology and Professional Programs (SEDTAPP) at Penn State; and the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering, Tribology and Lubrication Science minor at Auburn University.

Dr. Shah was extremely honoured and humbled to receive this recognition and credited it to all to his mentors, colleagues and friends in the petroleum industry who have offered invaluable guidance, support  and help to him over the years.
