The digital future of aviation and diesel fuel lubricity testing

26 Feb, 2026

Precise lubricity testing is critical to both aviation safety and diesel engine reliability. Without sufficient lubricity, pumps seize, injectors scuff, and mission-critical systems fail. Laboratories tasked with this responsibility increasingly demand automation, traceability and precision. Paltro‘s modern lubricity testers offer streamlined fully automated workflows, AI-enabled wear scar measurements and advanced sensors for data-logging and diagnostics.

For aviation laboratories, the BOCLE-ADV compliant with ASTM D5001 represents a significant advance in automated lubricity testing. The Ball-on-Cylinder Lubricity Evaluator measures the wear scar formed when a stationary steel ball is loaded against a rotating steel ring partially immersed in the test fuel. The 45-minute protocol includes a controlled pre-treatment and test phase. It yields a mean wear scar diameter that directly reflects the fuel's lubricating performance and its compliance with JFA and JFB reference fluid specifications. This innovative unified system revolutionises testing by seamlessly integrating mechanical evaluation, optical imaging, analysis, and reporting. Integrated imaging features a digital microscope that is built-in to the test unit for wear scar analysis, thereby eliminating requirement of separate microscope. A.I. artificial intelligence and machine learning enabled algorithms auto-detect the wear scar and deliver measurements thereby minimising operator error and reducing variability. Slide-n-fit spacers enable lateral offset of the ring, allowing users to conduct 10 tests per ring to maximise usage. Inbuilt diagnostics proactively alerts users to maintenance needs such as water level and air pressure for uninterrupted operation.

For diesel fuel lubricity assessment, Paltro also offers the fully automated, A.I.-powered HFRR-ADV, compliant with ASTM D6079 and ISO 12156. Using a ball-on-disc geometry under tightly controlled conditions for frequency, stroke, temperature, and humidity, the 75-minute test concludes with automated wear scar measurement. Proprietary edge-detection algorithms eliminate subjective interpretation, improving repeatability and precision. HFRR-ADV integrates the vibrator, electronic controller and salt-free humidity system into an ultra-compact footprint. It requires only distilled water to maintain precise humidity levels. Rapid stabilisation shortens turnaround times between tests, while preloaded standards and automatic report generation simplify operation. Unattended testing frees lab technicians to focus on other critical tasks. Importantly, Paltro supplies not only the instrument but also the rings, discs, balls and accessories, maintaining quality control across the entire fuel testing chain.

As the world pivots to renewable and synthetic fuels and sustainable aviation fuels, lubricity testing is more critical than ever. Automation and digitalisation from BOCLE-ADV and HFRR-ADV will boost lubricity measurements ensuring that sustainable fuels are safe drop-in replacements.
