D1319 is used as the designated regulatory method by the EPA for determination of total olefins in gasoline. Recently, however, API has conducted an evaluation using ASTM cross check data that confirms that ASTM D6839 meets EPA requirements for use as a valid alternative method to D1319.

This D6708 assessment of the two methods is reported in an ASTM research report, available directly from ASTM. A revised D6839 includes a full reference to the research report, and a statement towards D1319. This approval will benefit all laboratories who plan to use D6839 as the alternative method per EPA regulation effective January 1, 2016.

This formal approval for the use of D6839 instead of D1319, allows users to also benefit from other advantages of the Reformulyzer:

  • Better precision than D1319
  • Faster time to result than D1319
  • Higher productivity through 24/7 automation.
  • Lower Cost in Chemicals & Consumables
  • No need for ‘dirty’ liquid chromatography separations.
  • Additional group-data on Paraffins, Iso-Parafins, Aromatics, Naphthenes and Oxygenates in the same analysis (data can be compared to official methods such as D4815, D5580, D3606).

If you need an alternative to D1319 for olefins determination in Gasoline, Reformulyzer M4 is now allowed within this new regulation. Please ensure to refer to D6839-15 for more detailed information on bias, scope and precision statement.
