Alloy mix-ups can cause problems in refineries and plants. Valves, fasteners, piping, and other com ponents must be carefully identified for grade and chemistry to ensure compatibility with specifications for the process system. API 578 is a Recommended Practice "Material Verification Program”. Solution: Use handheld Alpha Series™ XRF to analyze low Ti, V, and Cr (FAC) in alloys and fluids on the spot. Grade ID’s for weld rods, fasteners, etc, are on the PDA in multiple libraries—common words, DiN, UNS, ASTM, etc. Test at processing temperatures to 400°C.
