ASTM International’s committee on petroleum products, liquid fuels, and lubricants (D02) has revised its standard for hydrocarbon types in liquid petroleum products by fluorescent indicator adsorption (D1319). This latest revision documents the results of a study that evaluated performance of a new production batch of the dyed gel used in the method versus the workable past production.

In 2018, the dyed gel that had been used to conduct the key test method covered in the standard became unavailable.  These revisions represent the petroleum committee’s ongoing efforts to address this issue. An alternative dyed gel was substituted, which was subsequently found to be unsuitable for analyzing aviation turbine fuel, diesel fuel, and spark-ignition engine fuel, leading to the ongoing shortage of the original dyed gel in the marketplace.

The latest revisions to D1319 discuss performance testing for the developed prototype dyed gel that is reported by the manufacturer to be chemically similar to the original dyed gel. The evaluation indicates that the prototype and the original dyed gels demonstrated similar reproducibility. These revisions include the addition of an appendix and research report that provides the results of the prototype dyed gel performance evaluation. ASTM International’s petroleum committee encourages participation in the ongoing development of its current and proposed standards.
