At the refinery, both organic and inorganic chlorides can lead to rapid corrosion of overhead lines and catalyst fouling downstream. Organic chlorides can show up in crude oil mainly as a contaminant. They originate from the crude oil production processes itself or from previously used transportation vessels. High levels of organic chlorides can foul up the heat exchangers and cause further corrosion, as well as poison catalysts.

Since organic chlorides are not removed in the desalting process, it’s critical to detect and remove them quickly before they cause issues further downstream. However, by the time these organics make it past the desalter to the distillation towers or to the finished product streams, they exist at very low levels that are not easy to detect using traditional technologies.

The new Clora 2XP Analyzer from XOS (USA) surpasses traditional XRF limits, providing detection down to 0.07 ppm in hydrocarbons and allowing users to quickly make critical process decisions that can reduce maintenance costs and prevent downtime.

The newly designed, high performance x-ray optics powering the Clora 2XP Analyzer are ideal for monitoring chlorides below 0.5 ppm and providing enhanced process control. The Clora 2XP is also easy to use and provides analysis results in only 5-10 minutes. To begin, simply put the prepared sample in the sample cup, place it into the analyser, and press the “measure” button. A few minutes later, a direct measurement in ppm appears on the user-friendly interface screen. No need for titration. No consumables. No heating elements.

A recorded Webinar is available that discusses the worldwide refinery issue of chloride corrosion and reviews the next-generation solution, Clora 2XP, to help save money and time in an increasingly competitive market.
