The new Micro Distillation method covers a procedure for determination of the distillation characteristics of petroleum products having a boiling range between 20 to 400°C at atmospheric pressure.
The ASTM D 7345 covers sample range of light & middle distillates, automotive spark-ignition engine fuels, aviation gasoline, aviation turbine fuels, regular & low sulfur diesel fuels, biodiesel, 10% Ethanol blend, special petroleum spirits, naphtha, white spirits, kerosene, burner fuels and marine fuels. The new Micro Distillation test
method significantly reduces sample volume and test time required to conduct the distillation.
Precise Results To derive precision for new distillation method and its correlation to ASTM D 86, ASTM conducted a global interlaboratory study consisting of 33 fuel samples, including biofuels, and 20 laboratories. With reference to ASTM Research Report RR D02 - 1621, the Micro Distillation technology is precise, has comparable precision and good correlation with ASTM D86. The current work is in progress to add D 7345 as an alternative to D 86 standard test method to fuel specifications such as D 4814, D 975, D396, D1655, D3699 and others. Patented Microdistillation Instrument The PMD 100 & 110 are compact analysers and use a patented principle to allow a true "push-of-a button" operation making the unit exceptionally user-friendly for field application and allows an increasing operation efficiency when used for fuel quality screening at logistical points, fuel blending, at-line and in mobile labs.

Advantages Of New Method:
The method offers fast result within 6 to 8 minutes and requires only a low sample size of 10 ml. The PMD system is easy to use by one button
operation and requires no apparatus conditioning or cleaning. Other benefits are the portable design and precise results from the first run.
