Analytical instrumentation
BARTEC, a global leader in safety and measurement technologies, is proud to have its trace moisture analyzer tested in the test environment at OGE in Essen, Germany. The laboratory was planned, constructed, and made operational in just two years. It was part of the TransHyDE project, one of three flagship hydrogen projects funded by the Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) as part of the National Hydrogen Strategy. Since the beginning of 2026, OGE has continued to operate the hydrogen laboratory independently.
The PMA-5674 Process Trace Moisture analyzer from BARTEC has been tested in the H2 laboratory. It has been confirmed that PMA-5674 contributes to optimal results with precise and reliable measurements.
The measurement series addresses central challenges in the hydrogen economy: the absence of certified, high-precision measurement devices tailored to hydrogen’s special properties. Accurate process gas chromatographs and moisture analyzers are essential for determining gas properties and ensuring the safe and efficient integration of hydrogen into the energy system.
At the hydrogen laboratory, six process gas chromatographs from various manufacturers are being tested with diverse hydrogen test gases, advancing their development for industry readiness. BARTEC’s PMA-5674 analyzer provides cutting-edge trace moisture analysis, a critical parameter for determining the standard conformity of hydrogen, preventing pipeline condensation, and mitigating operational risks such as corrosion and erosion.
BARTEC’s PMA-5674 is designed to meet the demanding requirements of hydrogen plants, offering exceptional robustness and reliability. Its trace moisture sensors can withstand challenging conditions, including water slugs, without compromising performance. The sensor’s calibration reliability can be independently verified by accredited laboratories, ensuring long-term accuracy. The PMA-5674 was tested at OGE in the test environment.
The analyzer’s user-friendly design supports quick and seamless maintenance, minimizing process interruptions and operational costs. This is especially valuable for hydrogen plants, should they be small, unmanned, or located in remote areas, including offshore.
Hydrogen plays a pivotal role in the transition to a sustainable energy system, enabling the storage and transport of renewable energy through existing gas pipeline networks. Technologies like BARTEC’s PMA-5674 ensure that hydrogen meets stringent quality and safety standards, facilitating its use as a clean energy carrier for industrial applications, transportation, and re-electrification.
With the support of advanced technologies from BARTEC and other manufacturers, OGE's hydrogen laboratory is able to drive innovation and ensure the safe, efficient and reliable integration of hydrogen into the German energy system.
