Heavy fuel oil - formerly known as undesired by-product, is nowadays a sought-after raw material with wide application range (e.g. marine diesel, electricity, combustible ...). This viscose, highly polluted residual oil results from various processes (e.g. distillation, cracking) of oil refining industry. In addition to highly condensed, non-evaporable compounds it also contains heavy metals, and a significant percentage of thermostable sulphur and nitrogen compounds that need to be monitored as catalyst and environmental toxins.

These properties make analysis of heavy fuel oil a real challenge for the operators and measurement technologies. To ensure a quantitative combustion of the sample matrix and thus a quantitative conversion of the different included nitrogen compounds is crucial for a reliable and fast determination of nitrogen.

multi EA 5000, from Analytik Jena (Germany), guarantees correct results for the determination of nitrogen even for difficult samples. The innovative Flow Management System thereby is optimising the digestion of all components independent of matrix effects.
