The Private Sector Landlords Boiler Scrappage Scheme in operation in Scotland could help to reduce emissions arising from oil boilers.

Under the initiative, landlords can receive up to £400 for each of the properties they manage to go towards the cost of buying and installing a new boiler.

In order to take advantage, the Energy Saving Trust tells them to obtain a quote beforehand and apply for their voucher.

The cost of the work must also be paid up front, but once the invoice and voucher are returned together the money should be received within 25 working days.

According to the Oil Firing Technical Association (OFTEC), there is a significant opportunity to cut heating bills associated with oil boilers in Scotland, as well as to reduce emissions arising from their use.

OFTEC director general Jeremy Hawksley says: "There are over 93,000 households in Scotland which use oil heating.

"This scheme will benefit tenants who use oil boilers by reducing their fuel bills by up to 25 per cent."
