Scotland reveals pipe proposals to reduce emissions
Jun 17 2011
ScottishPower, National Grid and Shell UK have teamed up to work on a proposal to create a massive pipeline from Fife to the North Sea, designed to pump two million tonnes of carbon dioxide across the country.
The plans are the first of their kind in the UK and could push Scotland to the front of the race to develop technologies to reduce emissions and cut pollution.
WWF's climate policy officer, Dr Sam Gardner said that the plan to replace the flow of North Sea gas in the pipeline with carbon emissions is a welcome step towards cleaning up Scotland's biggest power stations.
"Changing the use of existing infrastructure to remove greenhouse gases rather than bringing even more polluting fossil fuels onshore is an important symbol of Scotland's move toward becoming a green economy," the expert said.
Meanwhile, Eurostar has set itself new targets to reduce emissions as part of a long-term objective to lessen its environmental impact.
