A natural gas pipeline suffered an explosion just outside of Kiowa, Oklahoma sparking a grass fire. The rupture occurred on Tuesday (August 20th) and while no one was injured, the fire spread quickly and destroyed a local resident's barn.

The 16-inch natural gas pipeline exploded around 11.30 am local time in a cattle pasture. A section of the underground pipe exploded, leaving a hole in the ground measuring around 20 foot. The pipeline ignited following the explosion, a common occurrence with natural gas ruptures, resulting in flames that reached as high as 200 feet. Witnesses of the incident also reported the noise of gas rushing from the pipeline, which fuelled the fire.

Crews worked to extinguish the fire as quickly as possible to avoid it spreading further and causing more destruction. It was contained and put out within a few hours of the incident. Due to the remote location of the pipeline rupture, no one suffered any injuries and the fire was not able to destroy any other properties.

As of yet it is not known what caused the natural gas pipeline to rupture. It was originally owned by Enogex, according to the Oklahoma Corporation Commission, however, Enogex stopped trading under that name following a merger earlier in the year. Enable Midstream Partners are now responsible for the pipeline.

Crews have worked to seal off the pipeline to stop any natural gas from leaking and to avoid further explosions and fires. Luckily there was a gas line maintenance crew working close by and so they were able to respond quickly and shut off the gas supply to the line.

Currently it looks like the incident was just an accident as there is nothing suspicious about the rupture, according to a spokesperson Sandra Longcrier for Enable Midstream Partners. An investigation is to take place to identify the cause of the explosion. Kiowa police have said there is no further risk of danger.
