Combustion Ion Chromatography (CIC) is growing in popularity for the measurement of halogens however the well established technique of microcoulometric titration (MCT) still has significant advantages which will keep it as the preferred technique for total halogen determination for the foreseeable future. These are:

  • TX-MCT has much lower detection limits than CIC (tens of ppb for MCT vs. hundreds of ppb for CIC).
  • The Thermo Scientific method of TX-MCT is an absolute technique and does not require calibration unlike CIC and competitor instruments.
  • TX-MCT provides a result within 10 minutes whereas CIC can take up to 30 minutes.
  • The Instrument footprint is much smaller for TX-MCT compared to CIC.
  • The operator skill level required for CIC is higher resulting in higher running costs.

Why is it Important to Analyze for Chlorine?

  • Chlorine poisons the catalysts used to turn heavy hydrocarbons into more valuable light hydrocarbons.
  • Catalysts are very expensive and once contaminated have to be replaced causing expensive plant shutdown.
  • Chlorides cause corrosion in pipelines, valves and transport systems resulting in leaks and potential environmental damage.

How to Measure for Chlorine in Aromatic Hyrdocarbons

The Thermo Scientific ECS 3000 Total Chlorine Analyzer is a high performance instrument which is ideal for the analysis of low levels of chlorine in aromatic hydrocarbons. This is demonstrated by the excellent repeatability and accuracy obtained during the sample analysis.
