In refineries and chemical facilities various kinds of water are used, e.g. steam condensate, return condensate, boiler feed water, cooling water and waste water. These kinds of water have to be monitored because organic impurities can lead to corrosion or damages in the whole industrial plant. Consequently TOC online analysers were developed. They quickly detect organic compounds so that operators can initiate discharging. But in the environment of these refineries or chemical industries explosive gasses, vapours or mist can be present. Any new machine is a risky situation, any spark could cause an explosion. However, the analysers need to be installed directly at the processes. Depending on the environment, expensive equipment such as a climate control (HVAC) or an analysis shelter is necessary.

LAR (Germany) developed an optimal alternative for extensive reconstructions. The analyser itself is encased in a special rugged stainless steel enclosure, an explosion-proof (Ex p) housing. LAR offers a wide range of tailor made Ex p analysers to monitor TOC, COD, TNb and TOD. These are developed in accordance to international standards such as IEC 60079-14:2007 e.g. IP 65 (Nema 4x) and the ATEX Zone 1 and 2 (T3, T4). The zone classification depends on the type of flammable substances e.g. gas, vapour, mist or a cloud of combustible dust, and on the probability that they can be present. These analyser housings enable a secure way for online analysis even in hazardous environments.

The entire measuring system is protected against explosive atmosphere, and minimises the risk of ignition of an explosive environment by a spark with its unique features. The Ex proof analyser is purged by nitrogen and works with a minimum overpressure of 1.2 bar. LAR's analysers work with the unique high temperature method at 1.200°C to oxidise all carbon compounds. The outside and housing of the measurement system has just an ordinary room temperature. In addition, in an explosive environment even the operation and service of the analyser can be carried out without any difficulties by use of Ex p keyboard and Ex p mouse. Thereby the operator has full access to the device without opening the analyser.

LAR's customised analysers are the perfect choice for reliable and fast online analysis. The Ex p analysers correspond to international standards and guarantee safe operation with each of their features in hazardous environments.
