As Flint Hills Resources (USA) prepares to open a new construction and engineering building at the Pine Bend refinery, the company is beginning work on a new, high-tech testing laboratory. These construction projects totalling $43 million will create more than 151,500 square feet of new workspace for scientists, engineers, designers and construction managers. Both buildings are constructed with state-of-the-art sustainable strategies, and will meet or exceed all building efficiency codes.
Contractor building
The new $30 million, 135,000-square-foot facility will provide workspace for more than 500 engineers, designers, and construction managers. The project led by Minneapolis contractor Kraus-Anderson is scheduled to open in early 2015. With an average of 2,500 contractors onsite daily, the Pine Bend refinery is the largest continuous construction site in Minnesota.
Testing laboratory
The new $13 million, 16,500-square-foot facility will expand the existing laboratory, where scientists perform about 35,000 tests each month. The project, employing more than 40 construction workers, should be completed in the summer of 2015.
Flint Hills Resources continues work on approximately $400 million in projects aimed at improving reliability, reducing key emissions, and improving the refinery’s ability to convert crude oil into transportation fuel. In Minnesota, Flint Hills Resources employs approximately 1,000 full-time employees, including more than 500 members of the United Steelworkers Local 662 Union.
