Shell could face criminal investigation

Aug 19 2011

Oil industry giant Shell may face a criminal investigation or a large fine as a result of its leaks in the North Sea.

Divers are now being sent down to attempt to close the valve leading to the leaking pipeline, while Shell has also revealed plans to place a 'rock mattress' on the seabed to stabilise the pipe.

The Government's representative for maritime salvage and intervention Hugh Shaw said that full investigation has begun into the spill, with a full report to be sent on to the Crown Office, a move which could result in court action.

Stuart Housden, the RSPB's Scottish director, said that it was essential that the inquiry is open and transparent.

"We need to know what happened, why, and if those responsible will be held accountable. But the inquiry must be broad enough to cover the preparedness and investment needed by government and industry to prevent future occurrences," he explained.

The Department for Energy and Climate Change recently called the spill "substantial" and the worst in British waters for a decade.
