New figures from the Houselisting and Housing Census have found that nearly a half of households in Tamil Nadu have upgraded to LPG/PNG fuel sources.

Tamil Nadu is the 11th-largest state in India by area and the seventh most populous state, and the new study was commissioned to document the changing habits of Indian households in the region.

It found that of the households surveyed, 47.9 per cent use LPG/PNG as their main mode of cooking, which represents a hike of 29 per cent over the last ten years. The majority (68.7 per cent) of these users were in urban areas, with around a third (28.6) in rural housing.

The least popular fuel forms were kerosene and coal/charcoal which were used by 6.9 per cent and 0.1 per cent respectively. However, kerosene is quite common in urban areas, where it is used by 11 per cent of the population.
