ASTM International’s electrical insulating liquids and gases committee (D27) has approved a new standard that will cover the use of recycled oil in electrical equipment.

According to ASTM member Jimmy Rasco, the new standard (D8180) will serve as a basis for the transformer industry to purchase re-refined transformer liquid.

“A standard for this purpose does not currently exist and there is confusion in the industry as to what should be used,” says Rasco. “This standard will explain the purchasing of re-refined transformer mineral insulating liquid.”

Rasco says that anyone responsible for building, using, or writing specifications for transformers will find the new standard useful.
