VUV Analytics (USA) has recently introduced the world’s first laboratory-scale vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) absorption spectroscopy instruments. The VGA-100 and SVGA-100 are both based on the company’s VUV Verified technology which rapidly and simultaneously collects broad wavelength absorption data from 120nm to 240nm, without the need for any vacuum pumps.

The products extend a very well understood and widely adopted technique based upon the Beer-Lambert Law into a region which has never been commercially explored. In the VUV, virtually all gas phase molecules have unique absorption cross-sections with enough structure for good qualitative analysis. The high energy electronic transitions also yield very stable and predictable linear responses which are often hundreds of times stronger than in the infrared, providing very sensitive quantitative measurements.

The VGA-100 is a non-destructive universal mass-sensitive GC detector, which can be easily coupled to almost any gas chromatography instrument. The small volume heated flow cell and transfer line, along with acquisition speeds up to 100Hz allows for excellent temporal resolution. The first-principal technique can also dramatically reduce current detector calibration requirements.

The SVGA-100 allows for continuous monitoring and real-time measurement of gas purity and concentrations. The instrument requires no chromatography to separate complex gas mixtures, utilizing a multi-port sample selection valve to allow for direct streaming of process gases. With the perpetual sampling configuration, the SVGA-100 is capable of 100x improvement in detection limits over most other gas analysers.
