PerkinElmer, Inc. introduces Swafer™, a new micro-channel wafer technology platform for flowswitching applications in capillary gas chromatography (GC). PerkinElmer’s exclusive Swafer technology

provides Clarus® Gas Chromatograph users with additional application flexibility, while delivering richer sample information, increased sensitivity, lower maintenance costs and increased sample throughput.

This exciting new technology can enhance productivity for most analytical laboratories and, in specific configurations and highthroughput environments, the Swafer can pay for itself in a couple of weeks. From simple techniques like connecting two detectors to one column and removing unwanted material from a column, to sophisticated multidimensional separations on complex samples, Swafer’s capabilities cover a wide range of applications. Two versions of the Swafer are now available.

The S-Swafer is a scalable splitting device designed for sample-stream splitting between a range of detectors or columns. The D-Swafer is based on the classic Deans’ Switch principle. Both the S-Swafer and the D-Swafer can be configured in multiple ways, offering a variety of additional capabilities. Many applications will benefit from the use of the Swafer, including the detection of pesticides in food products and the analysis of complex matrices (e.g. petroleum or natural products). With tools such as detector switching or heartcutting capabilities, the Swafer delivers better separations of complex samples, yielding additional, more reliable data. This new technology integrates all paths in contact with samples into a single circular disk only 20mm in diameter and 3 mm in thickness. The Swafer is inert and easily installed on any existing or new PerkinElmer® Clarus® 580 or 680 GC with programmable pneumatics. The technology is available immediately and globally.
