HORIBA Scientific (USA) and Olympus/Innov-X Corporation (Waltham, MA) have changed the name of the MESA-6000 to the MESA-7220 to reflect the recently published revision of ASTM D7220-06 (now D7220-12), the Standard Test Method for Sulphur in Automotive, Heating, and Jet Fuels by Monochromatic Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometry by ASTM International. The expanded method allows the upper measurement range to 942 ppm, specifies a PLOQ of 3 ppm sulphur, for the lower range. It also opens the scope of fuels beyond diesel and gasoline to include oxygen enriched gasoline, diesel/biodiesel blends, kerosene, jet fuel, jet fuel/biodiesel blends and home heating oils.

Knowledge of sulphur concentration is necessary for processing purposes. There are also regulations promulgated in federal, state, and local agencies that restrict the amount of sulphur present in some fuel.

Dr. Michael Pohl, Vice President of the Scientific Group, said, “The hope is that the new name for the MESA will help consumers identify with the new international standard and be confident that the MESA-7220 will not only meet, but exceed their quality control needs.”
