Fully ASTM D93- and ISO 2719-Compliant Flash Point Testing for Biodiesel

As the world moves toward sustainable energy alternatives, replacing fossil-based fuels with renewable options has become a top priority. This shift is further driven by rapidly decreasing geological oil reserves, global warming, and increased environmental awareness.

Among these renewable options, biodiesel – also known as fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) – plays a key role. Produced from sources like vegetable oils, animal fats, sugarcane, and recycled cooking oils, biodiesel is commonly used in blends such as B7, which contains 7 % biodiesel mixed with mineral oil-based diesel.

For the safe storage, transport, and handling of flammable or combustible liquids – whether bio- or mineral oil-based – the flash point is one of the most important safety parameters. It defines the hazard classification of liquids. Not surprisingly, flash point values are also part of fuel product specifications. Depending on the product (e.g., jet fuel or diesel), different methods are prescribed to determine the flash point.

Anton Paar’s Pensky-Martens flash point testers PMA 500 and PMA 300 are perfectly suited for measuring both traditional and renewable fuels. Fully compliant with ASTM D93, ISO 2719, and other international standards, they are ideal for accurately measuring the flash point of fuels such as biodiesel – ensuring both safety and regulatory compliance.

PMA 500 and PMA 300 save time and reduce costs through their unique features. For example, their patented ceramic-coated electric ignition system lasts over ten times longer than conventional systems used in comparable instruments – reducing operating costs and maintenance time. Another advantage of the PMA 500 is its efficient cooling system, which prepares users for the next measurement 20 % faster compared to other instruments on the market. Both instruments deliver precise results according to specified standard methods while being intuitive to use and easy to clean – saving time before, during, and after a measurement.

Explore our latest application reports to see how PMA 500 and PMA 300 can support testing of renewable fuels like biodiesel.
