Anton Paar now offers a fully automated viscosity testing solution for Procedure D of the ASTM method, enabling laboratories to perform SAE J306 winter grade (W-grade) testing with greater safety, speed, and efficiency.
The SAE J306 standard defines the viscosity classification system for driveline lubricants, such as automotive gear oils, axle lubricants, and manual transmission fluids. For winter grades (W-grades), including 75W, 80W, and 85W, cold-temperature testing following ASTM D2983 is mandatory – a procedure that spans roughly 17 hours and involves measurements taken at temperatures as low as -12 °C, -26 °C, and -40 °C.
Anton Paar’s system fully automates pre-heating, cooling, and measurement – no manual steps required – improving repeatability and significantly reducing the need for time-consuming retests.
Unlike traditional methods that use large cooling baths with hazardous and flammable liquids such as methanol, it features a solid-state Peltier temperature control unit. This eliminates the need for air conditioning in the lab to prevent condensation, water absorption, or extra room ventilation for flammable coolants – ensuring a safer, cleaner, and more energy-efficient laboratory environment.
Scheduling is also simplified. Tests can be started immediately and run unattended, which is ideal for testing overnight or during weekends, and users can retrieve results as soon as a test concludes.
Procedure D requires no repeated reference runs, so there's no need to re-test with reference oils. And with no regular exchange of coolant liquids required, laboratories can save valuable lab time and operational costs, while reducing system downtime.
