Upgraded Viscosity Testing: Fully Automated, Fully Compliant

Viscosity and density are critical parameters across the petroleum industry – from fuels to lubricants. With Anton Paar’s SVM series viscometers and the AP Connect lab execution system, laboratories can now move beyond outdated manual testing and fragmented data workflows. This combined solution automates viscosity measurement and data handling while ensuring full compliance with international standards.

The SVM series covers a wide range of petroleum products and meets more than 50 global standards, including ASTM D7042, ISO 23581, D4052, and ISO 12185. Specific models also determine the viscosity index (ASTM D2270), cloud and freeze point, and carbon-type composition (ASTM D2140, D3238) in combination with a refractometer. Measurement ranges extend from -60 °C to +135 °C and 0.2 mm²/s to 30,000 mm²/s. Sample and solvent volume can be as low as 1.5 mL, with a 150 % throughput increase over manual methods.

The robust metal measuring cell avoids glass breakage and reduces long-term costs. An optional autosampler offers up to 71 positions, enabling full automation of routine measurements.

Integrated with AP Connect, SVM devices (as well as other Anton Paar and even third-party instruments) become part of an intelligent lab ecosystem. AP Connect eliminates manual steps such as exporting data via USB or typing sample names at the device. Instead, samples are managed via centralized task lists and distributed to one or more SVM units. Once a measurement is performed, the data – including results, metadata, and audit trails – is automatically transferred to a central, secure repository, then seamlessly exported to LIMS or DMS systems if needed.

Compared to alternative solutions, AP Connect eliminates the need for separate instrument-specific interfaces and individual LIMS integrations. Laboratories benefit from a single system, a single interface, and reduced IT validation effort.

For high-throughput petrochemical laboratories, the combination of SVM and AP Connect offers a proven path to increased efficiency, traceability, and compliance – from sample input to final data export. It’s a scalable solution, ready to connect one or multiple instruments within a fully digital lab infrastructure.

Now is the time to replace legacy methods with a fully automated, compliant, and scalable workflow, which ensures fewer manual steps and greater data integrity.
