International Crystal Laboratories (USA) has introduced Cadmium Magnesium Telluride, a new ternary solid solution for semiconductor based room temperature X- and gamma ray detection (patent pending). CdMgTe has huge potential as a replacement for CdZnTe, the material most commonly used for this application. The new material has the advantage of being more suitable for the production of homogeneous defect free single crystals which will result in higher device yields at lower cost, thereby making the use of room temperature detectors more generally available at lower cost. Applications for CdMgTe detectors range from non-proliferation and airport security to medical diagnostic devices and spectrophotometers.
