Kuehne+Nagel commits to shipping 40,000 TEUs on biofuel, taking a step towards zero emissions

Kuehne+Nagel has taken a significant step towards achieving its zero emissions targets by securing the equivalent volumes of a waste-based next-generation biofuel, which will offset the CO2e emissions of 40,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units). In line with its commitment to sustainability, Kuehne+Nagel is offering customers the option to neutralize the CO2e emissions from their own shipments on any trade or service worldwide.

The biofuel concept adopted by Kuehne+Nagel is based on next-generation biofuels in accordance with RED II* standards, and it involves allocating fully traceable contingents of biofuel to customers' cargo. Biofuel is currently the most effective measure for transporting goods with zero CO2e emissions in container shipping. Unlike fossil fuels, which are exhaustible and contribute to additional CO2e emissions, next-generation biofuels are produced from renewable feedstocks and have a circular carbon lifecycle that aims to reuse waste or biomass. Kuehne+Nagel guarantees its customers 100 percent avoidance of greenhouse gas emissions (CO2e) in sea transport, as the production emissions of the biofuel and its lower density compared to conventional fuels are overcompensated.

Otto Schacht, Member of the Management Board at Kuehne + Nagel International AG, responsible for Sea Logistics, stated, "Kuehne+Nagel is committed to saving the emissions of 40,000 TEUs through the use of biofuel. We have secured this as the first of several high-volume options to offer our customers easy access to direct CO2e emissions free transport. We would like to encourage our customers to join us on the path to a zero-carbon future."

As part of its environmental goals to transition towards a zero-carbon business model, Kuehne+Nagel has joined the Science Based Targets initiative, which sets ambitious targets for reducing carbon emissions. The company aims to not only reduce its own carbon emissions but also support its customers in their sustainability efforts. In order to meet growing customer demand for green logistics and reduce transport emissions, Kuehne+Nagel is proactively expanding its sustainable service portfolio by offering innovative and easily customizable shipping options. This includes investing in low-carbon fuels, renewable energy, and verified CO2 reporting. The company's digital platform, sea explorer, also enables the identification of sea freight routes with lower CO2 emissions.

Kuehne+Nagel's commitment to shipping 40,000 TEUs on biofuel is a significant milestone in its journey towards achieving zero emissions and promoting sustainability in the logistics industry.
