The Plant run by Bio-Venta was officially opened last week thought the plant was completed in May and started operating last year. The plant exports a reported 98% of its production to countries in Europe including Sweden, Poland and Norway.
Environment Minister Raimonds Vejonis said at the opening ceremony: "We live in a consumer society, a society of consumers of fossil fuels, and such a way of life can take us nowhere. We have to change our habits.
"It means to not only live in energy-efficient houses and consuming biological products, but also driving environment-friendly cars, which use energy produced from renewable resources.
"Therefore, our dependence on fossil fuels and various external factors will decrease. The use of renewable resources ensures stability and independence. That is why I am very pleased to be present at the opening of the largest biodiesel plant in the Baltics, because the plant is a great acquisition for the Latvian economy, exports, and it will undeniably consolidate Latvia`s independence."
A reported 15,500 tonnes of biodiesel was produced by the 24 hour Bio-Venta plant, and forecasts of quadrupling this production in 2009.
