Finning Power Systems’ (Finning) provides second engine with bespoke rating for major offshore crane application.

Kenz-Figee, a leading offshore industry crane manufacturer has selected Finning Power Systems (UK) to provide a second, bespoke-engineered Caterpillar C18 engine to power an offshore crane for a major oil and gas company.

Developed and engineered exclusively for the application by Finning, the C18 engine has been specially modified to enable remote radiator cooling, creating a much smaller and lightweight package. This has resulted in Finning developing a new engine rating of 651 bkw (872 hp) at 2200 rpm, not previously available in this model.

The standard C18 twin turbo marine engine is heat exchanger cooled and is rated based on a maximum after-cooler temperature. Kenz Figee approached Finning to design, engineer and package an offshore solution that could operate in the ambient conditions specified, but with remote radiator cooling, to provide a smaller overall footprint.

With many years’ experience in developing bespoke solutions to meet specific customer demands, Finning was able to modify the engine’s cooling system and carry out stringent dynamometer testing to ensure that the required horsepower would be available.

With one engine already installed, commissioned and performing successfully in a safe area onboard the platform, Kenz-Figee had no hesitation in ordering a second unit from Finning for this latest offshore crane project.
