Tesco has become the first retailer in the UK to produce certified biofuel.
The supermarket giant has been given approval by Ofgem to produce biofuel certified under the UK's Renewables Obligation scheme.
It comes following the successful installation of waste-to-energy systems in two of its stores and two years of research and development to produce the fuel.
The biofuel is ethanol created from organic waste products in the waste-to-energy generators in the Dumfries and Manchester branches.
"This has been the culmination of two years' hard work by Tesco and to receive such exclusive recognition by the government is a huge boost for our renewable energy programme," said Tesco's head of environment for its property services team, Bukky Bird.
She added that the supermarket is looking to roll out the biofuel to more stores in the near future in its aim to become completely carbon neutral by 2050.
