A Danish food manufacturer is investigating how its waste products may be put to good use in biofuel composition.

Leif Jensen, owner of Gorlose-based Jensen's Organic, believes there may be the potential to use potato peelings to produce biogas.

However, he has been unable to secure government grants for the research as Denmark only funds studies of slurry for use in biofuel composition.

Instead, Mr Jensen has been working with Riso DTU, part of the Technical University of Denmark which focuses on energy resources with minimal negative climatic impact.

Part of the collaboration saw him attend an event in autumn 2010 which placed professionals interested in green energy in the same room together to discuss their ideas.

"Just getting together with other businesspeople like me has been worth it," Mr Jensen says, having previously been met with scepticism when he made his proposal at his bank.

"I will join again the next time I am invited to such networking meetings."
