Biofuel testing and other initiatives in the field of green energy could be encouraged through a greater number of government incentives.
According to Dan Ilett, editor in chief at enterprise environmental consultancy Greenbang, existing technologies should be put to work ahead of "sexier, shiny technology that isn't proven".
His words could encourage firms with renewable energy needs to undertake
biofuel testing rather than install clean energy systems that have not yet been fully evaluated.
"In terms of how well it's going in the UK, 80 per cent of carbon emissions come from cities, so the main rollout of clean tech should be very much infrastructure-focused," Mr Ilett says.
However, he adds that current penetration levels indicate that the clean energy market in the UK has "hit a wall".
In order to overcome this, he suggests that more incentives may be required to encourage companies to extend their existing efficiency schemes further.
