The Department for Transport (DfT) has introduced a new initiative that will demand an increase in the biofuel content of regular unleaded petrol in a bid to make the roads greener.

However, the move could see around one million motorists forced to pay more to buy premium fuel as the higher biofuel content will make it unsuitable for use in pre-1993 cars, plus many newer models.

The new regular fuel will contain ten per cent biofuel content, up from five per cent, with the DfT claiming that limited space on the forecourt is to blame for removing standard unleaded petrol.

"On the face of it, this looks like an eco-friendly initiative. But there’s nothing nice about forcing the most cash-strapped motorists to buy the most expensive fuel on the forecourt," said Julie Sinclair, of Auto Express, to Metro.

The AA also warned that the biofuel initiative will hit cash-strapped motorists the hardest and advised road users to check their car's compatibility well in advance.
