Biofuel composition 'makes existing infrastructure applicable'

Oct 11 2010

Liquid biofuel composition gives the power source an advantage over other eco-friendly forms of energy thanks to the fact that much infrastructure for fuel distribution is designed to handle liquids, it is suggested.

The observation comes from US coalition American Biofuels Now, but could equally well apply to any country with a developed petroleum distribution network.

Some 95 per cent of vehicles in the US use petroleum, the coalition suggests, whether they are carrying goods or individuals.

"Because our present transportation fuels infrastructure is set up for liquid energy - gasoline and oil - we need to leverage what we have, rather than switch to a whole new energy system," the group adds.

However, liquid biofuel composition could allow for this without significant alterations to infrastructure and may help to tackle the 71 per cent of petroleum consumption in the US that is accounted for by transportation.

The coalition suggests that, while the arguments about which biofuels to use may continue, now is the time to begin deployment of the practical options that are available.
