The importance of effective health and safety management in the oil and gas industry is highlighted by extensively reported examples of major process safety incidents.

The NEBOSH Technical Certificate in Oil and Gas Process Safety covers the principles of process safety management and the identification, understanding and control of process hazards to prevent process-related injuries and incidents in the oil and gas industry.

Candidates are assessed by written examination.

Who is the course for?

This qualification is specifically designed to provide a sound breadth of underpinning knowledge for those with safety responsibilities in the oil and gas industry to enable them to manage oil and gas operational risks effectively. It is suitable for managers, supervisors, safety staff, and safety representatives with safety responsibilities in the oil and gas industry, both within and outside the UK.

Delegates should already have an underpinning knowledge of health and safety issues and may already have studied one of NEBOSH’s Certificate-level qualifications.

Course structure

The NEBOSH International Technical Certificate in Oil and Gas Process Safety (Unit IOG1) is divided into 5 Elements studied over 5 days, plus ½ day for examination. The syllabus takes a risk management approach based on best practice and international industry standards and management systems. Topics include:

  • Incident investigation and learning from major incidents.
  • Hazards inherent in the oil and gas industry.
  • Process Safety Management.
  • Risk management techniques.
  • Contractor management.
  • Safe shift handover.
  • Hydrocarbon process safety.
  • Fire protection and emergency response.
  • Logistics and transport operations.
