Anton Paar’s RapidOxy 100 Fuel: Rapid Small-Scale Oxidation Test (RSSOT)

Sufficient oxidation stability is crucial for all types of diesel fuels regardless of how much biodiesel they contain. Degradation due to oxidation and derived oxidation products can change fuel properties, and impair fuel quality and engine performance. This is why oxidation stability is a mandatory test in fuel specifications EN 590 (B0 – B7), EN 16709 (B20 and B30), and EN 16734 (B10). According to these specifications, the EN 16091 test method describing the RSSOT is the fastest solution for product release with the required induction period of 60 minutes compared to 20 hours with the alternative test method (EN 15751).

Anton Paar’s oxidation stability testing solution RapidOxy 100 Fuel is the only instrument on the market performing the RSSOT in full compliance with EN 16091.

The RSSOT measures the induction period (IP) of the complete range of diesel fuels (B0 – B100) indicating oxidation and storage stability. According to EN 16091, a small sample volume of 5 mL is filled into the test chamber, and the preset program “B0 – B100” is started. The closed test chamber is automatically charged with oxygen to 700 kPa and heated to 140 °C. The measurement is finished as soon as the break point is reached, which is defined as a pressure drop of 10 % below the maximum. The result is given as the induction period in minutes: the time that elapses between the start of heating and the reaching of the break point (see Figure 2). The principle is straightforward: The longer the induction period, the more oxidatively stable the sample.

RapidOxy 100 Fuel maximizes sample throughput. The measurement setup takes less than five minutes, the test chamber can simply be wipe-cleaned, and the RSSOT time required for diesel fuel release according to the specs is 20 times shorter compared to the alternative test method. Highly accurate temperature control and full automation leave no room for errors and guarantee excellent reproducibility and repeatability for all kinds of diesel fuels (from B0 to B100). Spark ignition fuels and heating oils can also be measured according to ASTM D7525, ASTM D7545, and EN 16091. The compact benchtop size and prioritization of safety (built-in safety features such as automatic magnetic lock for the safety hood, over-temperature shut-off, and over-pressure shut-off) make RapidOxy 100 Fuel the perfect fit for oxidation stability testing of fuels.
