Dependable ultra low sulfur analysis in less than two minutes

Mar 18 2009

Advanced ultraviolet fluorescence detection combined with new injection and combustion technologies on the Thermo Scientific TITAN 4000 Total Sulfur analyzer allow for accurate linear ultra low sulfur analysis in petrochemical products with excellent repeatability and in full compliance with new American Standardisation of Testing Methods (ASTM) D5453 standard.

The ASTM D5453 method covers the determination of the total sulfur content in liquid petroleum, and is applicable for liquid hydrocarbons with a boiling point in the approximate range of 25 to 400ºC like naptha, distillates, ethanol, gasoline and diesel/biodiesel blends. Accurate ultra low sulfur content determination is required in order to optimise the life time of catalysts, increase up-time of the refinery operations and comply with the strict EPA regulations. Traditionally, determination of sulfur by combustion techniques has limitations regarding the boiling point range of the sample, caused by the applied introduction technique.

The newly designed TITAN 4000™ is equipped with a patent-pending sample injection system and folded turbo combustion tube to deliver faster analysis times and a larger application range. The unique injection port – maintained at 80ºC – allows the injection of liquid samples within any boiling point range provided it is within the appropriate viscosity range. Keeping the needle and the injector at the lowest possible temperature helps prevent any blockage of the injection needle when analysing viscous samples or higher boiling point components.
