Overfill Protection Systems Achieve SIL Certification
Aug 19 2009
Scully Signal Company (USA) has a long-standing reputation for reliability and safety in the petroleum industry. The excellent safety standard provided by their systems is now quantifiable with IEC 61508 SIL 3 capability.
SIL levels provide a quantitative assessment of the Safety Integrity Level (SIL) of a safety Control system and have increasingly become a requirement in Tank Storage and transportation industries. SIL Ratings give a standards-based methodology for predicting failure rates for equipment that is used in a safety-related applications and can allow users to assess overall safety levels within their facilities. Scully Signal Company’s self checking and self-testing ST-15 and ST-15 WX overfill protection systems and associated overfill sensors have recently been assessed as being SIL 3 capable. Scully’s ST-15 systems, which are dynamically self checking and verify EVERY system component 30 times per second, are the only overfill detection systems that are certified as SIL capable. The assessment was performed by exida, a leader in automation system safety. Copies of the Failure Mode Effect and Diagnostic Analysis which details failure rate calculations are available from Scully signal company or from exida.Digital Edition
