Custody Transfer Accuracy for the Oil and Gas Industry

Dec 07 2011

Siemens (USA) has a longstanding reputation for combining deep industry knowledge with innovative thinking with solutions capable of meeting the unique challenges faced by any industry.

For the oil & gas industry, one of these challenges is to be able to quantify the medium flowing through a pipeline at any given moment – and a company’s reputation and profit margin might both be at stake. Siemens can help. Their most recent development for the oil & gas industry, the SITRANS FUT1010 ultrasonic flowmeter for hydrocarbon applications, offers custody transfer accuracy and is virtually maintenance-free.

Just what distinguishes the SITRANS FUT1010 from the competition?

TransLoc sensor mounting system. With TransLoc, the sensors are permanently mounted on the outside of the meter, preventing contact with the medium and eliminating cavities that cause sensor fouling. In addition, an IP65 sensor enclosure rating and the use of dry couplant guarantee outstanding performance with minimal maintenance required.
WideBeam signal processing. Siemens’ WideBeam transit time technology enhances flow measurement precision by using the resonant frequency of the pipe wall to transmit the beam into the medium, with the wall acting as a waveguide. The outcome is a strong and coherent signal for high accuracy and rangeability.

The versatile SITRANS FUT1010 is available in two versions, one for liquid hydrocarbon measurement and another for gas measurement. Since the TransLoc mounting system allows for laboratory calibration, the performance of the liquid version complies with OIML R117 and API recommendations. With such output options as liquid density and API, the dual-purpose meter also serves as a perfect replacement for intrusive densitometers. It is ideal for flow measurement in custody transfer pipeline, terminal, refinery and transportation applications.

The gas version is compliant with AGA-9 and features an internal fixed AGA-8 table that allows the meter to report standard volume flow without a separate volume-compensating flow computer. Its non-intrusive configuration and ability to operate at high frequencies make it well-suited for applications with valve-generated acoustic noise. Application examples include production wells, underground storage, gas processing and power plants.

In addition, the SITRANS FUT1010 can be supplied with upstream and downstream pipe sections along with a flow conditioner to allow for the execution of laboratory calibrations on the entire meter run. This helps to ensure performance transfer between calibration and actual field conditions.

Another major benefit of the SITRANS FUT1010 for the oil & gas industry is that it meets stringent qualifications for usage in numerous countries throughout the world. A variety of approvals are available, including INMETRO, CSA, FM, ATEX and CRN.

Additional product highlights include; calibratable accuracy (<0.15% of flow for liquid, <0.2% of flow for gas), measurement of liquid viscosities up to 2800 cst and meter sizes ranging from 4-24 inches (DN100-DN600).

Corrections for zero drift without interrupting flow by dynamically compensating for variations in sensor temperature is offered, as is the option of 2, 3 or 4 sensor paths. The SITRANS FUT1010 is suitable for installation in Div 1/Zone 1 hazardous areas and offers user notification of pig passage.
