A 2 parts per million (ppm) limit for H2S in bunkers will be taking effect in July this year under ISO 8217:2010, the latest revision of the standard including test method IP 570. The limit for H2S was introduced into ISO 8217:2010 to safeguard ships' crew as it may be found in marine bunker fuels, and can be released as a highly toxic gas.

An updated version of the test method has been approved by the UK Energy Institute, now IP 570 12/A, which incorporates the new Vapour Phase Processor (VPP) procedure.

The method compliant H2S Analyser and VPP instrument from Seta Analytics (UK) has been to proven to remove any interfering chemical species previously shown to be present in a small number of fuels.

IP 570 continues to provide a quantum leap in ease of carrying out H2S liquid phase testing, giving the marine industry a robust specification tool for monitoring H2S in marine fuel.
