Interrogation System with an Integrated Light Source

May 27 2012

The new Wavecapture FBGA device from BaySpec (USA), covers wide wavelength range and provides simultaneous measurements at very fast response rates and excellent wavelength resolution. High reliability (MIL STD 810F shock and vibration) is achieved through a rugged mechanical design with no moving parts. Periodic calibration is not required. High speed Input/Output (I/O) is achieved through the use of USB2.0 communications or Ethernet (serial communications also supported at lower speeds).

The WaveCapture FBGA System’s core spectral engine employs a highly efficient Volume Phase Grating (VPG) as the spectral dispersion element and an ultra sensitive InGaAs array detector as the detection element, thereby providing high-speed parallel processing and continuous spectrum measurements. FBG optical sensing systems do not use electrical conductors and are therefore completely immune to EMI and high voltages. This is ideal for applications requiring sensor measurements in close proximity to noise sources such as power transformers, electric motors, antennas, and oil/gas pipelines. The signal is spectrally dispersed with the VPG, and the diffracted field is focused onto an InGaAs array detector. Open-air and harsh environments can also greatly benefit from optical sensing due to its immunity to lightning and resistance to metallic corrosion, potentially reducing the long-term maintenance costs of the system.

For applications that span large geographic areas, FBG optical sensing systems are a well-suited alternative to electrical sensors. Dozens of FBG sensors, including temperature, strain, and pressure, can be daisy chained along a single optical fiber. As a result, the required cabling maintenance and installation is substantially reduced, making system deployments on the order of kilometers cost-effective. Furthermore, FBG optical sensing can reach very long distances (more than 10 km) without the need for signal conditioning.

Summary of features: High reliability (no moving parts), Ultra fast response time (up to 5 kHz), Excellent wavelength repeatability and resolution, Low power consumption design enabling battery-operated operation, High reliability for use in harsh environment, Integrated broadband light source, Up to 4 channels and USB, Ethernet or RS232 interface.

BaySpec’s WaveCapture FBG sensing systems benefit from experience shipping over 35,000 similar devices to the telecommunications industry, featuring: no moving parts, hermetic sealing, compact size, low power consumption (battery operational option) and low cost of ownership.
