Elemental Analysis in Petrochemistry – Fully Automated and Matrix-Optimized

Dec 13 2012

Fully automated carbon, sulfur, chlorine, and nitrogen analysis in liquid and solid samples is possible with the multi EA® 5000 from Analytik Jena. This micro-elemental analyzer uses an innovative multi-matrix sampler which enables you to master the most varied analytical challenges in next to no time with one single system. Its intelligent construction facilitates highest sample throughput. Liquids and solids can be dosed. Horizontal sample feed via boats or vertical direct injection are two further functions for the same device. The multi-matrix sampler thus offers you four systems in one. No need for laborious conversion or adjustment: The active configuration is recognized fully automatically by the system itself.

Gas analysis
The analysis of gaseous matrices is still a real challenge. No matrix type is as versatile in its behavior and the requirements for sample feed and combustion process. This makes it difficult to gain quick, precise, and reliable results. Thanks to the outstanding flexibility of the application-optimized gas sampling systems, the elemental analyzer multi EA® 5000 can analyze liquefied gases (LPG), pressurized gases (methane), but also none pressurized (expanded) gases for element contents in the range of ultra traces up to percentages.

Chlorine determination in petro matrices
Offshore-produced oil contains considerable chlorine contents, which adversely affect the transportation and refining process. High temperature oxidation followed by coulometric titration is the ideal technique to determine this parameter but suffers from incomplete combustion, escalating with the sample complexity. But the intelligent flame sensor technology of multi EA® 5000 fully automatically takes the varied combustion behaviors of samples and different quantities into account, which leads to complete oxidation, small variations, less need for replicates, and a distinct reduction of maintenance requirements.

Fast and interference-free total sulfur determination
The fast and accurate determination of smallest impurities in refineries and petrochemical industry is highly important. In order to avoid false results, Analytik Jena has developed an innovative new UV fluorescence detector with patented Micro Plasma Optimizer technology. It ensures a remarkable sensitivity of detection, ease of use, and flexibility of the analysis systems.
Additionally this technology can be used to determine lowest sulfur contents in presence of interfering nitrogen compounds, for all vertical and horizontal applications in solids, liquids and gas analysis.

The multi EA® 5000 from Analytik Jena brings along outstanding performance “Made in Germany” and many innovative features, e.g.:

  • Optimum sample feed
  • Low consumption of septa and needles, reflected in low running costs!
  • High sample throughput C, N, S, X in solids and liquids
  • Maximum amount of applications: TS, TN, TX measurement in just one analysis cycle
  • No limitations: solids, liquids, gases, and LPG!
  • High efficiency: sampler capacity and fully automatic control allow unattended 24/7 operation
  • Low acquisition costs: get four systems and pay only for one
