‘Lifeline’ Communications System Added to Safety Product Range for the Offshore Oil & Gas Industry

Nov 25 2014

International safety manufacturer, Dräger (Germany), has launched an innovative communications system – the X-zone Com – to help offshore workers react quickly to gas leak emergencies.

The compact, portable and lightweight X-zone Com equipment can be set up on its own or as part of a network of devices, to track gas detection levels in confined spaces and other areas.

The X-zone Com device is a lifeline for oil and gas workers as it gives additional time to shut down machinery and evacuate hazardous areas safely.

By using Dräger’s X-zone gas detection instruments, workers can stay connected and informed wherever they are. In the event of gas being detected, the X-zone Com sends all data and alerts users by email, SMS and a central ‘Cloud’ application, meaning hazardous area monitoring can be accessed across a wider range of important channels.

Offshore workers often find themselves in confined spaces and hazardous areas, where the danger of a hazardous gas occurring is present. Connecting gas detection systems to the X-zone Com communications device means data can be transferred wirelessly to mobile devices or control rooms.

Phil Saxton, General Manager of Dräeger Marine & Offshore, said: “During offshore work, personnel often have to work in confined areas. “The X-zone gas detection systems offer an interconnected monitoring solution ensuring both visual and acoustic alarm signals are transmitted.

“Combined with this brand new, next generation communications system – the X-zone Com – users can access data wirelessly over the GSM network. It is adaptable to user preferences and can be connected to the device of your choice.”

Time, place and gas concentration levels are the most important data in the event of a gas leak and in an emergency situation, every second counts.

Up to 15 Dräger X-zone can automatically connect to a wireless alarm-chain, which will accurately and comprehensively monitor large areas. Only one X-zone Com is subsequently required to transmit the data of the entire chain, with all important data, including the exact location of the hazard, being delivered to those responsible, in a matter of seconds.

Due to the extensive storage capability in the ‘cloud’, ongoing analysis of the data and trends is also possible. This new communications system offers a holistic solution covering all important measures related to evacuation and protection, as well as the elimination of the problem and quick, efficient and safe resumption of work.

Phil continued: “The X-zone gas detection monitoring and subsequent X-zone Com communications system has been designed to make employee safety more efficient and effective. With this type of system, users can react in seconds to a scenario from outside of the danger zone, thus quickly assisting their colleagues if a potentially hazardous situation arises.

“It is this cutting-edge combination of the X-zone equipment and X-zone Com which is pioneering new and safer solutions for the modern-day oil & gas industry.”
